Maj. Kyle Konkolics, 71st Special Operations Squadron safety chief, prepares to board a CV-22 Osprey May 10, 2023, at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M. Konkolics received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroic role in a rescue mission of an American hostage in Africa in October 2020. The successful operation was the longest-distance hostage rescue conducted during night in the Department of Defense history and was completed within 48 hours of their initial notification.
