  • Stride-for-stride

  • Cherish every moment

It’s 4 a.m., and a car parks outside the family home. Inside, a proud father of two takes one last look at his daughter and son before hugging his wife and walking out the door. As the car drives off, he stares out the window, hoping his wife and children will be all right for the next six months. This scene was my reality in September 2015 when I left for my most recent deployment, a day before my son’s third birthday.
  • Son continues family military legacy, works alongside father at Dobbins

A new pilot here has a particularly special memory from Father’s Day last year. While he was attending C-130 pilot training at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, his father came to visit. His father is no stranger to Little Rock AFB, he also attended training there as a young aviator and was later stationed there when his son was born. Some might call it a family reunion of sorts.
  • Grandson of Enola Gay pilot flies refurbished B-29

Wichita’s beloved B-29 Superfortress, Doc, took to the skies yet again June 9, 2017, from McConnell Air Force Base, this time with an added aspect of historical significance and Air Force heritage. Sitting in the co-pilot seat was Brig. Gen. Paul Tibbets IV, the 509th Bomb Wing commander. Taking control of the aircraft means he has now flown the only two currently operational B-29s, Doc and Fifi.

  • Birds of a feather: brother promotes sister via VTC

The video stream stuttered, lagged and occasionally froze, but it ended with Col. Theresa Goodman looking into a webcam and rendering a perfectly clear salute to her brother stationed 5,296 miles away from her location, Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. Col. Joseph McFall, the 52nd Fighter Wing commander here, promoted his sister, who he refers to as Tess, to the rank of colonel via video teleconferencing technology, May 15, 2017. As soon as her new rank took effect, Goodman made sure to jokingly let her older brother know it would be the last salute she would have to give him for a while.
  • Algerian triplets join Air Force for better future

Their journey has carried them over thousands of miles, from a barren region in Africa to California’s Simi Valley where eventually the Harchaoui triplets — Myriam, Rabah and Warda — would join the U.S. Air Force. Scott Air Force Base is now home to Myriam, who recently reflected on her unique journey.

As a first sergeant for Air Combat Command and an ordained minister, Henry Hayes not only shapes the lives of Airmen, but the lives of the children he and his wife, Stephanie, have fostered or adopted.
  • AF family navigates autism together

Michael Christi is a three year old who loves animals, enjoys playing outside and adores school. He is like any other child who learns new subjects and socializes, but he performs differently due to having autism spectrum disorder, a developmental condition that is characterized by difficulty with social communication and a display of repetitive behavior. Michael lives at Joint Base Andrews with his mother, Maj. Rebecca Christi; father, Jeff Christi; and three siblings. Rebecca and Jeff first noticed Michael’s autistic symptoms when he was a year old.
  • Resilience: One Airman’s story of faith, service

Senior Master Sgt. Jon Rousseaux was like many children who grew up in a military family. The self-described man of faith and service followed his father, a retired chief, into the Air Force -- and after 19 years, he is still at it. In fact, he just re-enlisted for four more years. Rousseaux’s years of service have strengthened his faith and resiliency, helping him through the most difficult time of his life.

  • Bataan Death March: Airman honors POW grandfather

Starvation, torture and a 70-mile march to concentration camps or dying in the process were the only options Philippine soldier, the late Ricardo Plana, faced after the U.S. surrendered the Bataan Peninsula to the Japanese during World War II. Now, 75 years later, his grandson, Staff Sgt. Max Biser, of the 23rd Security Forces Squadron, traveled to the White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, to complete the 26.2-mile Bataan Memorial Death March, March 19, 2017.
  • Overcoming the shadow of death: An Airman’s fight against depression

Staff Sgt. Srun Sookmeewiriya or Sook, as many people know him, may seem like a happy and carefree Airman at first glance. The 313th Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron NCO in charge of reports regularly puts forth an earnest effort to keep his unit alive and running, so his dark past and struggle with depression and suicide come as a surprise to many.
  • Behind mother’s love: Enlisting for child’s chance
