    The Puerto Rico National Guard has released the names of the victims of the WC-130 Hercules aircraft accident, which occurred May 2, 2018, near Hilton Head Airport in Savannah, Georgia.
  • Dentist charters private plane for Puerto Rico

    Ortiz Gonzales reached out to a friend from dental school, who was also from Puerto Rico. Together, they worked with a church in Florida and chartered a private plane. It wasn’t cheap, but the price did not deter her. She personally funded the mission and got to work gathering supplies to fill the entire plane – from all the fixings for a massive Thanksgiving dinner, to water, to generators and solar lamps.

    Not long ago, Airmen from the 158th Airlift Squadron, Savannah, Georgia, were delivering supplies with their fleet of C-130H Hercules to hurricane victims in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. But just a few weeks later, they find themselves on the other side of the world in Southwest Asia supporting Operation Inherent Resolve.

    Growing up in Puerto Rico five miles from Roosevelt Roads, one Airman from Travis Air Force Base, California knows all too well the dangers due to the location of the island. “Since I was a child, my family would always stock pile food and water in preparation for the hurricane season,” said Capt. Christian Ocasio, 821st Contingency Response Support Squadron civil engineering officer. “There would always be a powerful storm heading straight toward us, but would change directions at the last minute.” That’s exactly what Hurricane Irma did after devastating the U.S. Virgin Islands. In the wake of Hurricane Irma, Ocasio and his team were sent to the Virgin Islands to perform an airfield assessment of airports in St. Thomas and St. Croix.

  • Partnership enables JB Charleston sealift relief efforts to Puerto Rico

    The first humanitarian relief supplies sealifted from Joint Base Charleston to Ponce, Puerto Rico departed Oct. 31, 2017. In the hours following Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, JB Charleston C-17 Globemaster IIIs responded delivering more than 1,700 tons of aid, supplies and medical teams to affected areas. Although the C-17’s have the ability to get to austere locations quickly, the amount of cargo it can carry is limited.

    A week and a half post Hurricane Maria, it is hard to tell the Federal Aviation Administration was at “ground zero” and in the dark with no power or communication capabilities. Now, the air traffic flow at San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport is back to normal thanks to the Air National Guard stepping in to help the FAA and to restore air operations for the island.
