Department of the Air Force directs commanders to review unit emblems, mottos, nicknames, other official symbology
The Department of the Air Force directed commanders to conduct a comprehensive review of official and unofficial unit emblems, morale patches, mottos, nicknames, coins and other forms of unit recognition and identity to ensure an inclusive and professional environment within 60 days from Dec. 23, 2020.

CSAF outlines strategic approach for Air Force success
The directive is a mixture of Brown’s expectations for what is required to ensure air superiority and for the Air Force to fulfill its mission to defend the United States and its interests. Though only 8-pages, the document spans a range of critical topics that touch on doctrine, Air Force culture, and the changing threats and adversaries the nation confronts.
ANG members recognized for heroic efforts
Six members of the Air National Guard were presented Meritorious Service Medals during a ceremony at the Pentagon Aug. 19, for their heroic efforts that saved a person’s life at the Lincoln Memorial June 4.
CMSgt Bass installed as the Air Force’s 19th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force
Chief Master Sgt. JoAnne S. Bass formally took the reins Aug. 14 as the Air Force’s 19th Chief Master Sergeant, in the process becoming the first woman and the first person of Asian American descent to be elevated to the service’s highest-ranking enlisted officer.
X-37B spaceplane wins Collier Trophy for advancing ‘the boundaries of flight and space exploration’
The Department of the Air Force’s X-37B spaceplane, a reusable, multi-purpose, system that operates without an onboard crew, won the prestigious Robert J. Collier Trophy Aug. 13 for advancing technology that pushes “the boundaries of flight and space exploration.”
First meeting held for military-wide Defense Board on Diversity and Inclusion
The board was established by Secretary of Defense Mark Esper as part of the Department of Defense’s efforts to improve diversity, inclusion and equal opportunity for U.S. service members.

The idea is simple and effective – leaders including Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein, and Chief of Space Operations Gen. John Raymond among others are divided into separate “Blue” and “Silver” teams. Only one team at a time works from the Pentagon.

Unlike the Cold War, when space was primarily the sole province of the United States and the Soviet Union, today “many European nations plus Japan, China and India and more than 40 countries are spacefaring with satellites, probes and sometimes human travelers.
