  • Hill AFB F-35s, Airmen deploy to Europe as part of Theater Security Package

Funded through the European Deterrence Initiative, the TSP provides a more robust U.S. military rotational presence in the European theater capable of deterring adversaries and assuring partners and allies of U.S. commitment to regional security. The F-35s and members of the 421st and 466th Fighter Squadrons arrived at Aviano Air Base, May 24 and will remain in Europe for several weeks.
  • Aviano F-16s deploy to Turkey

The U.S. Air Force deployed a small detachment -- six F-16 Fighting Falcons, support equipment and about 300 personnel -- to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
  • PMEL: The standard's standard

Zero mistakes. That's the standard the precision measurement equipment laboratory (PMEL) technicians are held to on a daily basis. One mistake in their shop could mean the difference between a guided weapons system firing on target or missing by several feet.
  • Power lifting through faith, strength

Staff Sgt. Ashley Bryant, a Tulsa, Oklahoma-native, broke the women's national bench press record with a 231.1 pound lift during a weight-lifting competition in Illinois while home on leave.
  • Lasting impressions of an AF honor guardsman

Walking tall throughout the base, it's apparent that Master Sgt. Andre Moore stands out from the rest of the Airmen. His uniform is sharp and he carries himself with pride. He has the mark of an Air Force honor guardsman. Not unlike a tattoo, the Air Force Honor Guard experience is impressed upon Moore for the rest of his life, but instead of ink staining his skin, professionalism saturates his demeanor.
  • Ample Strike: F-16s support aviation detachment rotation

F-16 Fighting Falcons from the 510th Fighter Squadron and approximately 150 support personnel from the 31st Fighter Wing at Aviano Air Base, Italy, arrived at the U.S. Air Force Aviation Detachment here, Sept. 4-5.
  • Aircrew flight equipment flight: 'The last ones to let them down'

The 31st Operations Support Squadron's aircrew flight equipment flight here is responsible for all of a pilot's flight equipment such as helmet, oxygen mask, harness and all life-saving equipment. Their motto: "When everything else fails, we are the last ones to let them down."
  • Aviano AB Airmen support Army mission to Poland

Airmen from Aviano Air Base recently supported a series of troop movements in partnership with U.S. Army Europe's Land Forces Assurance Exercises. Aircraft services technicians assigned to 724th Air Mobility Squadron here, worked around the clock to provide air mobility operations and support to the 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team from Vicenza, Italy.
  • Airmen, Soldiers sharpen search and rescue skills together

Joint-service combat search and rescue training missions were held for the first-time Jan. 28 to Feb. 11 at Cellina Meduna training grounds near Maniago, Italy. The 31st Fighter Wing teamed up with the U.S. Army 12th Combat Aviation Brigade for joint training. There were several aspects to the training mission to include close air support, Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape training for personnel on the ground and a search and rescue coordinated with a U.S. Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crew extracting isolated pilots from "hostile" environments.
  • Real Thaw 14 kicks off in Portugal

Approximately 260 Airmen from the 31st Fighter Wing arrived in Monte Real Air Base, Portugal, in support of Real Thaw 14 -- a two-week close air support exercise hosted by the Portuguese air force.
  • Close-air support key to strategic success

Known as CAS, close air support uses military aircraft in an attack against enemy ground forces that are in close proximity to friendly forces. This requires detailed coordination with ground troops and is typically conducted by joint terminal attack controllers. The use of CAS during wartime can be a critical strategic military tactic that has serious impacts on the outcome of ground warfare.
  • Twin defenders share same military story

When a young Airman joins the Air Force, saying goodbye to family is inevitable. But for two brothers, saying goodbye is one thing that they have yet to experience. Woo and Ja Lee, 20 year-old identical twins from Fresno, Calif., have shared not only their civilian life, but to their surprise, a military career.
  • Maintaining aircraft integrity one coat at a time

With a new state-of-the-art Corrosion Control Facility on Aviano, aircrafts are now serviced in-house for a quarter of the cost. Up until last year, all F-16 Fighting Falcons on Aviano were sent to either Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, or a Belgian based aerospace company for repainting, costing the Air Force nearly $108,000 each time.
