  • Northern Strike exercise shifts to real-world mutual aid response for Guard firefighters

    Firefighters from the Michigan Air National Guard’s Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center and the New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing respond to a request for mutual-aid support at a large structure fire in downtown Alpena, Mich., July 21, 2020. The fire protection specialists had been supporting exercise Northern Strike 20, the National Guard’s annual joint fires readiness event, shifting quickly to assist the response when called upon by local authorities.

    Together, the United States Air Force and Navy, Japan Air Self-Defense Force, and Royal Australian air force raced against the clock in a realistic exercise scenario to save 24 patients from a bus rollover. They worked alongside Guam’s Army National Guard and local police and emergency medical personnel during integrated medical, air and ground operations.

  • Edwards AFB sends earthquake response to nearby base

    According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the first earthquake struck at 10:33 a.m. July 4 with a 6.4 magnitude and is now considered a foreshock. A second quake shook the area the following day at 8:20 p.m. with a stronger 7.1 magnitude. Estimated economic losses of what the USGS now calls the Searles Quake are at least $1 billion; furthermore, the air control tower at Plant 42 was also damaged. The exact extent of that damage is still under review.

    Everybody has the capacity to help somebody. That singular concept is the launching point for the “Stop the Bleed” campaign, a joint effort between the federal agencies and civilian organizations in response to Presidential Policy Directive 8. It is designed to build national resilience by empowering bystanders to understand and implement simple methods to stop or slow life-threatening bleeding, particularly during trauma events.
  • 386 AEW mental health team builds bonds, shatters stigmas

    It can start with a simple conversation. “How are you?” “Yeah, I bet you see some crazy stuff at your job.” “That must have been really hard for you to process.” What at first seems like a run-of-the-mill conversation, stemming from a friendly visit, is more than meets the eye. It is a check-in. It is non-invasive, and it is from a friendly face that is just there to learn more about what Airmen do, and ask how they were. It’s the art of human engagement, and it is practiced by the 386th Expeditionary Medical Group mental health staff.
