  • JB San Antonio environmental program takes off with UAS technology

    The Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center’s Unmanned Aerial System project was initiated in late 2019. Then, in March of this year, the Air Force presented a $3 million Small Business Innovation Research Program award for the project.
  • AFRL, associates improve processes for fabricating aircraft engine inlet ducts

    Part of the Air Force 2030 Science and Technology strategy includes the deployment of low cost unmanned aerial systems in mass to assist in future near-peer engagements.   • AFRL XQ-58A UAV completes second successful flight

    The Air Force Research Laboratory developed a low-cost unmanned air vehicle together with Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. The joint effort falls within AFRL’s Low Cost Attritable Aircraft Technology portfolio, which has the goal to break the escalating cost trajectory of tactically relevant aircraft.
  • FAA grants AFRL waiver to operate SkyVision technology to advance UAS research

    The Air Force Research Laboratory in partnership with the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center has achieved its goal of establishing a test site within one hour of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio from which AFRL researchers can fly Unmanned Aerial Vehicles from beyond their visual line of sight.

    After the success of the first range experiment of the Directed Energy Experimentation Campaign at White Sands Missile Range, in October 2018, the 704th Test Group’s Directed Energy Combined Test Force is now planning future experiments in support of the campaign.
  • Air Force Research Laboratory, partnered with Wright Brothers Institute, announce International “Swarm and Search AI Challenge”

    The Air Force Research Laboratory, United Kingdom Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, or DSTL, in collaboration with Wright Brothers Institute and University of Dayton Research Institute, announced, the “Swarm and Search AI Challenge: 2019 Fire Hack.” The challenge will explore new, efficient and resilient ways to plan complex unmanned aerial systems search and rescue missions. Concurrent challenges in the U.S. and the U.K. will conclude with a final showdown taking place March 29 - 31, 2019.
  • Researcher, security forces bring new counter-UAS program to Bagram Air Field

    As the use of unmanned aircraft systems rises across the world, researchers from around the Defense Department are testing new ways to counter the new threats they could present. The 455th Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron teamed up with a researcher from the Air Force Research Laboratory to teach Airmen how to pilot drones and use them to train coalition forces on how to react to them on the battlefield.

    The Air Force Academy took second place to the Naval Academy at the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency sponsored unmanned aerial systems Swarm Competition, April 23-25 at Camp Roberts, California.
