In the 2000s, the global war on terror made for fast paced changes to BMT. Young men and women not only needed to be prepared for the responsibility of being a vial member of the Air Force, but they also needed to embody the warrior ethos written in the Airman’s Creed.

In 2003, BMT personnel began a new tradition -- the Airman's Run. The event is conducted on Thursdays prior to the Airman’s coin ceremony. It was also the first opportunity for family and friends to see their Airman's transition from a trainee to an Airman.

The next big change in BMT occurred in November of 2008, when training time expanded from six and a half weeks to eight and a half weeks. The new, enhanced training program included more time for pre deployment issues, integrated defense and self-aid buddy care courses. The biggest addition was the Basic Expeditionary Airman Skill Training, or BEAST, a week-long field training exercise. This training superseded Warrior Week.

Each ATC is a four-story structure, made up of four separate towers, and is utilized by one training squadron. Each tower is connected by hallways that make up the perimeter of the facility. On each floor, in each tower, are two pods, which provide enough housing for one flight of Airmen. In total there are 24 pods per ATC. On the outside of each ATC is an outdoor running track, PT area and drill pad.

The square-like layout of the ATC is accessible from the drill pad on the ground floor. An atrium covers the middle of the facility, allowing outdoor training to continue during times of inclement weather or excessive heat. Drinking fountains and hand washing stations have also been installed on the ground floor.

Located between two of the ATCs are the dining/classroom facilities that are shared by two separate training squadrons. The state of the art classrooms are equipped with computers and are large enough to teach a whole flight. The dining facility is twice the size of the RH&T dorms and is capable of feeding two squadrons at a time. Still centered in the middle of the dining facility is the MTI table, otherwise known as the “snake pit.”

Like the Airman’s Creed says, “I am an American Airman. My mission is to fly, fight, and win. I am faithful to a proud heritage, a tradition of honor, and a legacy of valor.” For Airmen, past and present, BMT might be considered something short-lived compared to an Air Force career filled with milestones, accolades, deployments and various different opportunities. Yet for all Airmen, BMT could be considered the most transformational period in their lives.

The torch portrays analytic thinking illuminating the commander before action. The flames of the torch symbolize studies, analyses, and assessments. The saber represents military action and refers to the heritage of Air Force Studies and Analysis, AF/SA, callsign Saber.
