Secretary Donley announces location of newest Fisher House
Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley announces the acceptance of a Fisher House to be built on Dover Air Force Base, Del., during a ceremony to present the Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher Distinguished Civilian Humanitarian Award to Nancy Berglass at the Pentagon's Hall of Heroes Jan. 27, 2010, in Washington, D.C. The multidepartmental award was established in 1996 and is presented to those exemplifying personal qualities of patriotism, generosity, and selfless dedication to improving the quality of life of members of the Armed Forces of the United States. Ms. Berglass serves as lead consultant with the California Community Foundation's Iraq/Afghanistan Deployment Impact Fund. She is credited with distributing more than $245 million to 46 non-profit organizations that provide support services and programs to military members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and their families. The Fisher House Foundation donates comfort homes built on the grounds of major military and Veterans Affairs medical centers. The homes enable family members to be close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease or injury. The program has provided nearly 3 million days of lodging to family members since it originated in 1990. (U.S. Air Force photo/Jim Varhegyi)
