  • AFIMSC innovation project receives $3 million award

    The project uses drones and machine learning to revolutionize how the Air Force Civil Engineer Center collects data for its environmental mission. The initiative is powered by a partnership between AFIMSC, Air Force Innovation Hub Network (AFWERX) and Aerial Applications, a small business providing drone services and mapping software.

    The 366th Maintenance Squadron acquired the HandySCAN 3D, a hand-held 3-D scanner in October 2019 and began training Airmen on the most efficient ways to use the scanner.

    When an EF-1 tornado hit Fort Smith in May 2019, Ebbing Air National Guard Base was right along its path. With winds hitting an estimated peak of 105 mph, it was enough to uproot trees, tear off roofs and cause widespread damage across half the city.
  • F-35A Lightning II store separation test completed ahead of schedule, under budget

    In addition to fulfilling the test requirements ahead of the original test schedule, the independent drive system within the Arnold Engineering Development Complex Propulsion Wind Tunnel Facility at Arnold Air Force Base was returned to service in time for the test, providing a substantial cost savings over the Plenum Evacuation System mode that would have otherwise been used to create test conditions at the 4-foot Transonic Wind Tunnel.

    Known as the Aircrew Self Defense Weapon (GAU-5A), the 7-pound, 5.56 mm caliber rifle is based on the M4 carbine and was designed by the Gunsmith Shop in close coordination with the small-arms engineer to provide downed aircrew with additional firepower while they wait for rescue.
