  • Why I serve: The Kalkbrenner family

    As of 2017, approximately two million people currently serve in the U.S. military with millions of veterans serving before them in the several hundred year history of the country’s armed forces. All of these service members chose to don their respective service’s uniform for varying reasons. Many sign up to give back to their country. Others join for a steady paycheck, to learn a new skill, or for the numerous benefits such as medical and education, available to service members. For some, they join to continue a family heritage. Such is the case for Marco and Ivan Kalkbrenner, two brothers who chose to continue their family’s legacy of service, following in the footsteps of their father and grandmother. Ivan is an Air Force staff sergeant currently assigned to MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, as a security forces member. Marco retired in 2017 as a master sergeant following 20 years of service, also as a security forces member.

    The history of the 4th Fighter Wing includes many stories of great wingmen, including the incomparable team of Don Gentile and John Godfrey in World War II. By adjusting their tactics and working closely together in the air combat duels over Europe, they became two of the highest scoring American aces of the war. But an event occurred in March 1945 in which a wingman risked court-martial, imprisonment and even death to rescue the pilot he was assigned to cover. Remarkably, that wingman had almost been thrown out of the 4th Fighter Group multiple times by the very same pilot he would ultimately save.

    Two Airmen from the 386th Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal unit graduated from the U.S. Army Air Assault School held at Camp Buehring, Kuwait, April 14, 2017. The unprecedented graduation was the first time in history that Airmen, while serving on a contingency operation deployment, have graduated from this particular course.

Without warning, a pair of A-10C Thunderbolt IIs screamed toward the airfield and simulated multiple strafing runs decimating a radar jammer. A Tactical Air Control Party specialist embedded with the 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, confirmed the target was destroyed from a hideout in the woods nearby.

  • An explosion of training

    The 4th Civil Engineer Squadron hosted a joint-service explosive ordnance disposal exercise Sept. 13 - 15, 2016, on the EOD range at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina. EOD Airmen assigned to the 4th Civil Engineer Squadron organized the three-day exercise to familiarize EOD technicians of the munitions involved with the F-15E Strike Eagle. To maximize the effectiveness of the exercise, the organizers invited their counterparts at both Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, to participate.

    Her journey was full of unknowns. She was thousands of miles from home and in a very unfamiliar land. As foreign as she felt, there was one 7-foot wide circle that made her feel right at home. For Airman 1st Class Jessica Johnson, a 4th Aerospace Medicine Squadron public health technician, it was the moment she had long waited for. As she stepped into the circle, she remembered all the training, the blood, sweat and tears she had poured into preparing for this opportunity.
