  • Airman saves life amidst mass shooting

    Lt. Col. Nathaniel Ott, an instructor in Air University’s LeMay Center Joint Integration directorate, was working as an emergency room physician when he heard a “pop” from outside. Ott walked toward the nurses’ station, heard three more distinctive “pop” sounds and stepped outside to see a vehicle with nearby police attempting to assist the driver.
  • Maxwell AFB opens for Hurricane Dorian support

    Personnel from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Defense Logistics Agency arrived Aug. 29 to begin preparations for receiving trailers of food, water and other necessary supplies FEMA may use after the hurricane passes.

    It was seemingly a normal day in Panama City Beach, Florida. But stormy winds and rising tides hinted at the devastation that was to come. Thousands of residents there and in surrounding areas were ordered to evacuate. Among the evacuees who did were some 3,500 Tyndall Air Force Base employees. Some of them are now operating from Civil Air Patrol National Headquarters at Maxwell AFB, Alabama.

  • Enlisted pilots honored during ceremony

    The military's sergeant pilots, enlisted aviators who served from 1912-1957, were honored during a monument unveiling and dedication at Maxwell-Gunter's Enlisted Heritage Hall June 9. Nearly 14 years in the making, the monument depicts Corporal Vernon L. Burge, the Army Signal Corps' first enlisted pilot, in recognition of the service and sacrifices made by nearly 3,000 enlisted men who followed in Burge's footsteps.

    When the founding members of Civil Air Patrol, the U.S. Air Force auxiliary, risked life and limb to help protect the home front during the early days of World War II, they weren’t looking for recognition. Some seven decades later, though, they’re receiving it, thanks to the U.S. House of Representatives’ voice vote Monday afternoon to award CAP a Congressional Gold Medal for its volunteer service during the war, when more than 120,000 members stepped up to support the military effort and help keep the nation secure.
