  • AFLCMC Gunsmith Shop creates rifle for aircrew

    Known as the Aircrew Self Defense Weapon (GAU-5A), the 7-pound, 5.56 mm caliber rifle is based on the M4 carbine and was designed by the Gunsmith Shop in close coordination with the small-arms engineer to provide downed aircrew with additional firepower while they wait for rescue.
  • Newest F-35A squadron brings fifth-generation capabilities to Red Flag

    The exercise, which takes place from Jan. 27-Feb. 15, is meant to give at least 10 combat-representative sorties to younger pilots to better prepare them for real combat against very capable adversaries. The 421st Fighter Squadron is the most recent squadron to transition to the F-35A in the 388th Fighter Wing.

  • New weapons system completes first live mission

    The ground-based weapons system allows squadron members at Tinker AFB to provide command and control to both live and simulated aircraft from around the country. Only 18 of these weapons systems exist in Air Force inventory and Tinker AFB is now one of only four active-duty bases to have this equipment.
  • Air Force studies fatigue, sleep to enhance readiness

    Researchers with the Air Force Research Laboratory 711th Human Performance Wing, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, are looking for ways to better equip Airmen and their leadership with crucial data to ensure that Airmen are getting the necessary rest to maximize mission execution. A team of human performance experts is looking at sleep and fatigue from several perspectives. They are tracking sleep habits in pilots and other operators, while also evaluating sleep-monitoring technology to ensure its accuracy and ability to work in an operational setting.
  • Two pararescue Airmen receive Silver Star for gallant actions in Afghanistan

    Tech. Sgt. Gavin Fisher and Staff Sgt. Daniel Swensen were awarded the U.S. Armed Forces’ third highest military combat decoration for saving nearly 40 lives and eliminating more than 100 enemy fighters in two separate combat engagements.
  • Air Force surgeon general updates Congress on medical reform

    Lt. Gen. Dorothy Hogg, Air Force surgeon general, testified Dec. 5 before the House Armed Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Military Personnel, updating them on medical reform in the Air Force.
  • MacDill AFB supports joint force exercise

    Using a C-5M Super Galaxy and two C-17 Globemaster III aircraft in a show of Total Force mobility, the 512th Airlift Wing from Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, and the 445th Airlift Wing from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, transported the assets needed by the 305th Rescue Squadron from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona.

    The two-day event drew more than 250 attendees from across the command.     The topics have been selected for the Installation and Mission Support Weapons and Tactics Conference 2020, and the chairpersons will be on board this month. What remains is determining who will fill the ranks of the four Mission Area Working Groups charged with tackling some of the Air Force’s biggest agile combat support challenges at the fourth Annual I-WEPTACs in April 2020.
  • 552nd Air Control Networks Squadron creates first qualification training for Mission Defense Teams

    The 552nd Air Control Networks Squadron graduated nine students from the Air Force’s first Mission Qualification Training course for Mission Defense Teams, qualifying them to be operators on the Cyberspace Vulnerability Assessment/Hunter Weapon System.
  • Connectedness key to defeating the enemy

    For Tyndall Air Force Base, identifying the enemy has taken on a heightened sense of urgency since Hurricane Michael’s landfall on Oct. 10, 2018. The storm not only leveled the base, it also wreaked havoc on the lives of Airmen, civilian employees and family members displaced and impacted. Since then, the struggle to recover has not only been a physical one, but increasingly mental and emotional as well.
