To continue assisting TRICARE patients in North Carolina and South Carolina in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, the Defense Health Agency has extended until Sept. 30 its provider referral waivers. TRICARE patients in these states may continue to see providers in any location without a referral from their primary care provider until Sept. 30.
  • Annual consent for automatic prescription refills begins Sept. 1

Beginning Sept. 1, 2017, Express Scripts will need annual consent from patients who want to receive automatic refills of their maintenance medications enrolled in TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery. This means that just before one of your prescriptions runs out of refills, Express Scripts will reach out to you to know if you would like your doctor to be contacted to renew the prescription and if you’d like to continue in the Automatic Refill program. If not, Express Scripts will not refill your prescription.
  • DOD makes prescription drug disposal easy for beneficiaries

Defense Department health care beneficiaries can now safely and easily dispose of expired and unused medications by bringing them to a military treatment facility or, in some cases, picking up a mailing envelope from the installation to send for destruction of the medications free of charge, Dr. George Jones, the chief of the Defense Health Agency’s Pharmacy Operations Division, said Sept. 12.
  • A prescription for problems

Making sure their medical records are up to date and accurate could save Airmen selected for a random drug test a lot of trouble.
  • Avoid paying more for prescription drugs

This December, TRICARE beneficiaries can take action to avoid paying more for some prescription drugs. Beneficiaries filling a prescription for a select brand name maintenance drug at a retail pharmacy may need to move their prescription to either a military pharmacy or TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery. If not, they may have to pay full cost for their prescription.
