With the stroke of a pen, U.S. Space Force becomes a reality
President Trump signed into law Dec. 20 the sprawling, $738 billion defense bill, making history by creating the Space Force as a stand-alone, sixth branch of the U.S. military and guaranteeing for the first time 12 weeks of paid parental leave for federal workers.
Defense Department establishes U.S. Space Force
Today the President signed the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act and with it, directed the establishment of the U.S. Space Force as the sixth branch of the armed forces.

In accordance with the National Defense Authorization Act signed into law Dec. 20 by President Donald J. Trump, the U.S. Space Force is the sixth branch of the United States military.

Responsibility as the U.S. military's top enlisted service member changed hands at a ceremony hosted by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Virginia, Dec. 13.
SEAC Troxell announces new positional rank insignia
The senior enlisted advisor to the chairman serves as the principal advisor to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on matters pertaining to the enlisted joint force. The unique insignia serves to differentiate the position, its duties and responsibilities.
Global Strike commander addresses industry, academic leaders
Gen. Timothy Ray was the keynote speaker at the event coined “Nuclear Forces and 21st Century Strategic Deterrence” with a program theme of “An Air and Space Force Designed for the Future.”
Air Force releases findings of civil airport, aircrew lodging policy review
The review, led by AMC’s deputy commander, focused on existing guidance and policies and how they are applied. Specifically, the review looked at aircrew lodging, the associated processes and procedures and the application of those policies to the use of civil airports and the advisability and appropriateness of use of commercial lodging facilities.
Air Force observes National Cybersecurity Awareness Month
The awareness month is a collaborative effort between the Department of Defense, along with the Department of Homeland Security and its public and private partners. It is up to the total force to stay vigilant, keep learning and be ready for any potential cyber threat.

Air Force contracting process enhanced with new hybrid funding opportunity announcement
The new hybrid FOA is a two-part announcement offering an alternative acquisition strategy for the DPA Title III Program. One path is the open FOA, in which white papers may be submitted at any time by industry. These must be submitted in one of three broad topic areas: sustainment of critical production, commercialization of research and development investments or scaling of emerging technologies.
DoD delays Post 9/11 GI Bill changes
The implementation has been delayed until January 12, 2020, giving long-serving members more time to transfer their education benefits to spouses or dependents.
AFRL and partners reclaim obsolete aircraft parts using advanced manufacturing technology
The Maturation of Advanced Manufacturing for Low Cost Sustainment program was created to utilize advanced technologies to address the current challenges of keeping aging aircraft flying safely. MAMLS is a public-private partnership led by the Air Force Research Laboratory to accelerate advanced manufacturing and digital technologies for improved efficiency of DoD sustainment operations.
